Same thing with the sacking of Baghdad. Prior to the Hunns sacking it and salting their fields it was THE center of learning in the world. They used to actively collect copies of every book they came across in the world. Had scholars whose sole job was copying and collecting knowledge. They were centuries beyond the rest of the world in certain things. They even used to perform cataract surgery.

The castrati were a groupe of men that were castrated so They could sing in high tones 3 comments

Wasn't just high tones but that was generally what they were used for. Notable Castrati would have at least a 3 octave range and many could do more.

"Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times". This is not completely true nor is necessarily wrong but, it does seem to present itself repeatedly in our society. It's all to easy for us to get complacent because we currently have strength. And that complacency blinds people to the enemies we have that are just waiting for a weakness to present itself to strike.

My next question is "what are 5 minute crafts?" but I can guess that that's crafts that are supposed to be done in 5 minutes.

You know I never understood where that name came from. It was something the older kids called it when I was young so that's what we called it. After that it kinda stuck.

There are things in physics that you need massive amounts of learning to understand. These things can be explained simply but not correctly or correctly but not simply. My favorite is when trying to explain gravity, gravity wells, and gravity between systems as it relates to celestial bodies. With a hands on explanation/model you can see the effects which mimic reality but why they happen is completely different in the models as compared to the real thing.

Photoshop - an origin story 6 comments

It's a double exposure trick. Some genius found that if you take a second photo with a used plate the images would overlap each other. This is just a product of that. Still really cool for an era long before Photoshop was even an idea.

AOC doesn't have the slightest grasp on a working economy. She's been nothing but a parasite since she gained office.

The actual procedure is the drag a sheet of paper with glue on the top side behind you as you walk back and forth across the area. But if you can perform Holy magic you can skip this step.

I've heard about these. Usually it's just a regular map but I guess a tattoo works too. You color in the countries you've visited the goal being to visit every country on the map before you die.

Tick's are actively attracted to white things. The bedding shown would cause every tick in the area to move onto it. It's actually one of the ways to de-tick an area by drawing them out. It's a genuine step in the Army procedures for creating a site.

Didn't they have a complete embargo on manufacturing equipment to the South. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that, that was why the South tried to secede. Only around 2% of the population actually had slaves, the really wealthy, and even then they knew it would be far cheaper to have machines doing the work.

A round trip would take about 21 months. It would take a minimum of 18 months for a resupply to show back up assuming that refuel and reload were ready for the ship upon return. But that's assuming we use a ship to carry it. It actually wouldn't be that hard to have 4 years worth of supplies on the first trip. Much of it can actually be sent ahead to be retrieved once they get there. They just send it like they did the probes. A controlled hard entry to make sure it's intact and viola, supplies are there waiting. Water would be the hardest supply to take but it's possible with current tech. However, no one has actually tried to live in an environment like Mars. It's almost certain that things will go wrong and probably at the worst moment. Space is not kind and will kill you at the slightest problem and Mars with it's much reduced atmosphere is not any better.

If you limited yourself to 100 years you would still need to suck roughly 95 dicks a second to finish.

Aquatic Scuba Vampires (the aquatic part seems redundant) 7 comments

It's actually an interesting thought. Living humans can acclimate to almost any pressure if they do it slowly. Of course you need a working circulatory system for it to work. Vampires don't have that so they would be limited to the first couple hundred feet. Then there's all the things in the sea that eat dead flesh which is just about everything.

Working in the service industry %90-%95 of the attitude we get is the result of the customer's own actions. Customer uses or does thing resulting in cost for said thing. Attitude, "How dare you charge me for this service you've provided, even though I used it. It wasn't the one I originally thought I needed so you need to only charge me for what I thought I needed not what I actually did.
