Or they just don't have an answer worth mentioning and want you to move on to another topic. Some people don't care to discuss their personal lives good or bad. Or they don't know. Not all of us stop and consider what is going on in our lives to determine if it's bad or good instead we're just living. Highs and lows may be a talking point but most of our lives are relatively flat.

It has to be B!!!!! 10 comments

Well it is a preference question but I am vehemently for B. Also it just so happens to be the prescribed method for use on the original patent for toilet paper. Also also, if you use A I am going to judge you and everything you do. But it is still a preference question.

And what does it say that instead of afraid I find myself fascinated instead? Imagine being able to see and study an ecosystem that develops all from a single corpse.

I like quotes. I'm not a big fan of inspirational if by inspirational you mean makes you feel good or better. I do like the inspirational that inspires a person to study a topic more before deciding on their opinion though. Not a huge fan of having an opinion because something feels good/pleasant/I like that or bad/yucky/I don't like that. Sometimes a good feeling is bad and a yucky feeling is good.

Kinda on topic but kinda not. I once did a report for school about the death penalty. The question was whether the death penalty was a deterrent for crimes or not. The conclusion was it's generally not, but only because of it's current format. When the death penalty was carried out quickly, and publicly (this is important) it was far more effective as a deterrent. The problem happened when public executions were forbidden. It dropped significantly as a deterrent. The whole out of sight out of mind thing rapidly went into effect. Now as far as whether we should have it or not? I have my opinion but I won't share it. It all boils down to if you think the criminals can be successfully rehabilitated; the cost to society is worth the permanent detention in order to avoid a death; or the criminals death would benefit the society more than the negative of killing a human being.

When not using your first language and you forget the word for a common item so you revert back to your first language. At least that's what I'm getting from this.

It all boils down to perspective bias. The liar thinks everyone else lies. The thief thinks everyone steals. A pacifist thinks everyone "generally" is also a pacifist. The problem is perspective bias is sometimes right. Generally it's wrong, but sometimes, sometimes it's right. This leads to things like the exception that proves the rule. Then there's the problem with Twitter and others feeding that initial bias with other people who share the same or similar perspective bias. This leads to confirmation bias which is as pervasive as it is hindering. Here's the rabbit hole if you'd like to read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias

That's because he was a smart man. True, he was also a horrible, dirty scoundrel that loved money and power and would use unscrupulous means to get either one, but he was a smart man.

Concealed carry finger sandwiches 2 comments

As they say, context is everything. My first thought as I read that was "piece" referring to a piece of music. That being said I've never heard a sandwich called a piece so it's extremely unlikely I would ever have considered that as what was meant by the word.

I leave this here since it seems relevant: “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.” -John Stuart Mill.

Yes, but I don't have the equipment. Then there's that cost and so on. I don't go shooting enough to make it worth the investment.

There's a phrase in the Army "A happy soldier is a complaining soldier". Now this is true to some extant in reality. Many people love to complain and that's okay. It's only when the complainers stop complaining and start doing that you need to watch out.

I own a 1912 version of the 1892, 44-40 Winchester rifle. I inherited it from my late grandfather and it's really fun to shoot. However, finding ammo for it is a down right pain. If you can find it at all it's usually really old, or really expensive, or both. Shooting for fun, safely, is great but if it cost a $1a bullet it gets expensive quick. If I'm lucky I can get it for $.40 a bullet but still more than I want to spend for some fun. And before you comment I know there are more exotic or expensive ammo out there but I don't need those to shoot my gun so it's not a real comparison. I do have empathy for people that do though even if my sympathy is a bit lacking.

Of course that's the worst and the best part about truth. We do all have our rose tinted glasses but trying to find the truth regardless of that handicap is a noble pursuit. The hardest part in my opinion is not swapping one shade of glasses for another. It's always best to go smaller rather than larger when attempting to find the truth. Physicist have it way easier in that regard because there is an absolute limit and the smaller we go the better we can understand reality. Sociologists on the other hand are constantly hampered by "culture" and the fact that while you can go down in scope the big picture can be just as important. As for your example, right now biological sex isn't in question. Your chromosomes dictate that and anything else is merely cosmetic or ideological. We may get to the point were we can change that but for now it's just not possible. But that is biological it's rather cut and dry. Sociological it's a mess and I try to avoid the sociological whenever possible.

"How Much Money Can You Make Donating Plasma? You'll typically be paid between $20 and $50 for each donation, and depending on how often you go, you can earn as much as $300 per month donating plasma." I've know several people that used this in conjunction with a part time job to make ends meat or help pay off unexpected expenses. You can generally donate once every 48hrs or twice in a 7 day period and up to 24 weeks out of the year. The total weeks limit may vary place to place but even with that and the lowest price that still an extra $960 a year just for meeting 3 criteria. First, you have to be alive. Second, you have to be willing to donate. Third, you can't be sick. Sorry that means no vampires or zombies may donate.

And here we are, politics turning to shit 2 comments

It's a great idea and I'd love to see it happen but it's really hard to accomplish. Even countries with laws requiring more than two parties struggle with this one. Many end up separate only in name. Anything that requires a majority vote and not a greatest percentage vote to win will eventually end up as, functionally, a two party government. And this problem gets worse the bigger the government/population of country. Even percentage voting can easily fall into this trap since smaller parties will always lose no matter what unless they get others to vote with them or ally with more parties, hence the, in name, comment.
