Math Professors have opinions too 9 comments

I've just had a quick Google, common consensus is that both are grammatically correct with some saying that mathematics can be considered a plural noun and it depends on where you live as to which sounds right. I.e. I'm from the UK so maths is right, you're from somewhere else (Canada or US I'm guessing) so for you math is right.

Biology, chemistry, physics etc all come under the term 'the sciences' I would argue that maths makes more sense, especially as it is a contraction of mathematics not mathematic.

Using your voice actually uses very little air so someone saying they can't breathe could well be on the verge of suffocation/strangulation etc (learnt on a restraint course where a case study was brought up that a child was improperly restrained, complained he couldn't breathe and subsequently died because the staff thought he was lying as he was able to talk)

I tried this the other day for fun (I'm 30) it hurt my back and didn't seem as quick as it used to. Next one to try is sliding down stairs although I fear it will have much the same results

In old stories disguises were never seen through no matter how simple they were e.g. dressing in different clothes but not changing the face. For instance in Shakespeare plays characters often go about in disguise and nowadays we'd be saying "Why didn't anyone know?" but in Shakespeare's day audiences would have taken it as a given that the disguise was good enough to trick everyone until the character intentionally revealed their true self. When you keep this in mind a lot of stories make a lot more sense.

I went on a training day recently and they didn't start the slideshow, just clicked through the slides like you would if you wanted to edit them.

I completely agree, unfortunately (in the UK at least) the curriculum is completely age-inappropriate it's not right and most teachers will try their best to cover things in lessons but for a lot of children extra work is needed just to keep up with the 'expected' level. This has a knock on effect for teachers who need to work extra hours to produce, mark and feedback on this work, this in turn leads to burn out so new teachers often leave after just 5 years on the profession meaning there's a lack of experienced teachers.

You're not a teacher then? The whole education system is unrelenting for children and teachers.

It's just too crude for my liking and even if I try to put that to the back of my mind it's just not funny and it really put me off him. I ducked because everyone loves him.

It is absolutely true, the National Grid have reserves of power for when they think more will be needed, e.g. in the ad breaks of 'big' TV shows like the X-factor final https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_pickup
