Mrsuperman - you can find sources to back up any arguement. In your case, your source is bullshit. Yes, people in the south during slavery were called democrats, and the northerners were republicans. But the republican party changed their ideas more and more towards the right and were eventually adopted across the south. So the old democrats (right wing) in the south were slave owners and the old republicans were abolitionists (left wing). As time went on, the new republicans (now right wing), were the same racist people, but now called themselves republican, enacted racist policies like Jim Crow laws and racial segregation.
