Today I could go to work, or I could stay home and spend hours learning everything about the evolution of mountain goats.

Why should a company be able to dictate what you do when you are off the clock? 23 comments

First, that employee hasn't done anything wrong yet, besides being creepy once in private with me, which is far from being a crime. Second, that employee is probably ill, a condition that is better dealt with by getting him/her the help they need than by firing them.

Whut, in which country do they do that? The name of the company for which you work isn't written on your face, so why do they care? Do they also refuse to hire you if you don't have a public Facebook profile?

Purple is not a real color, it doesn't exist 7 comments

Facepalm. There are two kinds of purple. The one that's a superposition of red and blue, and the one that's actual 400ish nanometer light at the opposite of red in a rainbow. Our eyes cannot see the difference, but many cameras can. If a camera reproduces a purple correctly then that purple is a red+blue mix, the cam picks up both components easily. But often, something that we see purple looks blue on photos. That's because it's a true purple that's too high in frequency, the blue sensor picks it up but not the red one.

I can relate. I write scientific software and I need to keep two dozen things in my head at any given time, each interruption is one hour lost.

And churches, churches everywhere, different brands of churches. And people actually use them. I counted six times more churches per kilometer when commuting in Pasadena than in my high-density Dutch town.

Gold shirts have a mortality rate of 13%, red only 10. I was surprised at first when I read these numbers, then I realized that indeed, most away missions don't even have red, like on the picture.

Or they'll get a good job, an exciting life, and will have more interesting things to do than destroying the lives of high school dropouts. These people destroy themselves anyway. I looked up my highschool bullies on Facebook (I'm 35 now), it was pathetic.

Why the hell would they hide that under "info"? Info if for passive, read-only, local stuff who has no place anywhere else in an app because it is of no use to the app itself, only to the curious user. If the app needs user input (such as the version number/date to recover) then it's not passive out useless. This is basic ui design. If files are versioned then it should be under file/versions. Like it is in every other non Microsoft app.

Except that screens have a contrast of 1:256 while reality easily has 1:1000000 on sunny days (which is why we implement bloom and stuff, to pretend). But do I really want my computer screen to be as bright as the sun?

There's a difference between lying and being wrong. Lying requires knowing the truth. So does his nose grow whenever he says something incorrect or only when he does so on purpose? In the second case, no paradox, he's not lying he's just making a prediction that turns out to be false. However, if the nurse grows whenever he says something that is factually incorrect, then he'd possesses absolute knowledge of the entire universe, except for a few useless Gödel sentences like this one.
