Did you ever consider the reason they look awkward is the same reason many people look awkward at important things? Look at their eyes. Her eyes appear to be looking off center a bit, which could mean multiple people could be taking their pictures. It is always awkward and a pain in the ass when having to try and look at multiple cameras taking your picture at the same time. Considering that this was taken at her graduation, a few of her family members might be there. Most of which would take the opportunity to take this picture, showing the survivor with her savior, if you will.
