Being open minded does not mean blindly accepting everything humanity throws at you, and it certainly doesn't make someone smarter than anyone else. Being open minded means being ready to hear other people's opinions, being willing to listen to their arguments and taking the time to actually think about what they are saying. I wouldn't say a bad movie adaptation "ruins" the book, but it can be a major disappointment. Take Eragon for instance, one of my favorite books which I've read multiple times. When I found out there was a movie adaptation, I was so excited to see what they did with it, to see the characters in my mind come to life. But I was really disappointing to see that the only thing they really got right was the title. On it's own it's not that bad, but when compared to the book, it's a bitter disappointment. And it can be hard to hear someone say how much they love the movie while you're there thinking "Man, if only you loved to read! Then you'd really see how amazing a universe this really is!"
