I think it's b/c in Chinese, five is δΊ” (wu), which requires five strokes to write. They just moved 4th stroke to make it more distinct. Japan and Korea also adopted this character with their own histories.

I love this as it reminds me of chanting repeatedly in HS latin class all together with the teacher leading: Amo, amas, amat! Amamus, amatis, amant! Which for those that do not know might sound like necromancy for beginners, but it really just means: "I love, you love, he loves! We love, you all love, they love!"
