The letter is fake, but she submitted a real application to Harvard. This was written as a joke for her high school satirical newpaper.

It's good that neither committed suicide, but both of them are wrong if this was an attempt to kill the other one and pass it off as a suicide.
Both need counseling and probably a divorce.
