No, this is a capitalism thing. The way this country operates its economy is a race to the bottom: the cheapest prices and the cheapest products as fast as we can get them. The byproduct of that is horrible labor practices that we turn a blind eye to because we like our stuff too much. Labor unions and the minimum wage kicked that stuff out of the US, but all that did was ship it overseas. Our economy is out of whack: theres no way we all should have tiny computers to argue on the internet with but still not be able to afford healthcare and housing.

This is a news article from my home state of New Mexico. NM is lousy with private prisons, with former governor Gary Johnson once having a scandal involving bid rigging. The private prison system is a menace, and actually more expensive to run than state prisons, but they create a layer of deniability that insulates the state.

And believe it or not, Wikipedia is pretty damn conservative. The majority of the well-researched, well-sourced articles in English are written by white men about western topics, with the exception of the bafflingly large number of articles about anime. It's also very hard to establish yourself in the Wikipedia editing community as theres only a handful of actual active editors, and one guy has edited over a third of the articles.
