Superman isn't rich like Bruce Wayne, but he's not broke either. He's working class, and even though he's an all powerful demigod, he has more in common with Joe Schmoe on the street than Batman does. Clark Kent goes to work every day and actually sees what happens in his city, as opposed to just fighting it.

I remember my mom being absolutely flabbergasted by the fact that I work full time but can barely afford to live on my own. For her, 40 hours should equate to a being comfortable, but she last worked like 10 years ago.
