It sounds like a deflection though. Like, "somebody did much worse, so what we did isn't that bad." Comparison is the lowest form of analysis.

"The government" is a simplistic way of thinking of it. Specifically, it was the royal government who, the colonists believed, didn't have the right tools to successfully govern them. The revolution created a government by overthrowing one. But yes, much of it was based on the British having too much say in the military and how it operated.

If you stubbornly hold onto ideological principles in the face of practical change then nothing works. Hardcore, Marxist style socialism will never work, and neithet will straight laissez faire capitalism. Generally, you need some sort of hybrid system that combines the best of both in a moderate, regulated way.

It's almost like all phenomenons involve a small minority of people. In the grand scheme of things any individual is very, very unlikely to get shot...doesn't mean that we should be okay with the rate our citizens kill each other and the way we, collectively, just shrug our shoulders about it.
