There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part.

Marriage equality is so much more than asking for equal rights, it's demanding that the government remove discriminatory laws in place preventing all adult couples the right to marry. You all are absolutely right! No one is hurt by equality, there is not a certain amount of love that will run out if more people marry- this issue should be a simple one.

It took my parents a bit, but I think it was a lot more difficult when the hope of marriage was completely non existent for us. I am pansexual (which means I am attracted to people emotionally, despite their gender) but my mom still saw it as she would never see her daughter walk down the aisle. It's a lot different for us now, though.

I think the generation before us are the ones with the older ideas, the ones who don't believe in equality- and they are being driven out by younger, fresher, more progressive people. I've been out for over ten years, and attitudes are definitely changing, and minds are opening. And people like you are a big reason why :-)

You are a wonderful person, and it's people like you who make the world a safer and better place for non-heterosexuals. Don't be sad, be happy that there are people like you in this world, making it better!

Lol, I think Sparklez and Tara have the Queen title- I would rather be the wise slightly kooky old wizard with all the cool books and spells- that seems more me than royalty lol. And yes, Saviour Self was the pen name I took on for the advice column I had in high school, like a "Dear Abby" thing. I liked the word play :-)

Thank you Future, that means a lot! And I appreciate that, but alas lol- I am a woman- I could be The Drag King of Funsubstance- but I think you (Saras), Darkan, or Songofthewhitestag would be much better choices. For Kings, that is- drag optional

No problem, and you're amazing! To be able to put into words what you are going through is very mature- a lot of people wouldn't be able to do that. You should be very proud of yourself :-)

Definitely, and remember only you can define yourself, so there is no rush at all. Even if you choose never to label your sexuality and instead just say you fall in love with who you fall in love with (which is a great) that is perfect too. It's your body, mind, and spirit. Don't feel pressured to make it fit into a category.

Hey MusicGirl- I think sexual identity (whether you are gay, straight, or anything in between) is so much more than a black and white issue. There have been studies done showing that there is only a super small percentage of people who exist as 100% homo or hetero sexual- most of us live somewhere in between. And just because today you are attracted to men doesn't mean tomorrow you won't find a girl who has everything you want in a partner, and your own thoughts of sexuality will change.

Basically what I am saying is we are all looking for those people who make our hearts beat faster, who make us happier and better by being around them. If one day this turns out to be someone of the same gender, don't think there is anything wrong with you. You just are falling for their mind and spirit, not their parts.

If you believe a metaphor that shows the degradation and tearing down both physically and mentally by sexual activity was meant to "inspire and encourage" then we are too far apart here. Ripping petals from a flower, literally deflowering a rose and telling students this is what happens to them during sex is inaccurate, malicious, and untrue. It doesn't deserve their attention or their time.

Here are some other practices being used by abstinence only education, rather than teaching comprehensive sex ed, with consent, prevention, and true empowerment. We're not going to agree here Mike: http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2007/04/02/abstinence-only-craziness/

Telling anyone that having sex lessens them or takes away from them is hurtful, derogatory, and completely antiquated. To tell this to women is to have some idea that a man's penis is so powerful that a very encounter with it can somehow fundamentally change who you are, that it can "strip your petals" or take away your beauty, which is a sexist and terrible message to send. Not to mention ridiculous.
°
Abstinence only teaches shame and the idea that sex is harmful rather then focusing on ideas of consent, safe sex, prevention of pregnancy, and ways and reasons to empower yourself to wait or engage that are honest and shame free. No idealistic metaphors of "flowers wilting" or "tarnished virtue," but honest and comprehensive facts and lessons.
