Seems a little odd... To think that someone doesn't want to talk about something just because it needs to be addressed. I think that's a very immature and inaccurate way to think about people you disagree with.

I've never liked thisargument. Life is about making choices, and choices come with consequences. Depending on the choice you make, the consequences can either lead you to more freedom or less. You can exercise your freedom to smoke, but then you find yourself addicted, in which case your freedom has been reduced. The point is, you have to give up some "freedoms" in order to obtain greater ones. You have to choose between options because you can't always have both. Sometimes that even means you have to forego some good things for the sake of better ones.

Just one of the wonderful things that children are better at than adults. If only more of us could hold on to that.

It's easy to talk about what should be done, but actually having the sense and composure to do the logical thing in a high-pressure and unexpected situation, I bet, is not nearly so easy. I wonder how many of us would even remember this in time to make a difference...?

That's what I would've said, anyway.

Well the ones with the smallest minds tend to have the loudest mouths (or at least the opinions we pay more attention to and remember more), so yes that effect can occur.

Thank God (literally) that not all religions have fallen into that trap. That was a Dark Ages adaptation of religion. Unfortunately many still hold on to it because it is easy.

The point being that it's all about love and acceptance... except towards people who disagree. I will admit that the double standard is quite frightening and disappointing sometimes.

There's nothing wrong with learning facts. Those aren't where the lies exist. Besides, facts in themselves are essentially meaningless -- what matters is how we choose to interpret them. We see facts (this is assuming the facts are true, of course), combine them with subjective background knowledge, and then we create implications, assign the facts to a priority hierarchy, build arguments and conclusions, and quite literally decide for ourself what the fact means. I think it's absolutely critical to differentiate between the facts themselves and all the interpretation that we build around them. That's where the mistakes are made.
Am I making any sense?

Whenever a car is driving the speed limit in the fast lane 16 comments
supernovamike · 10 years ago
Judging from what I've heard from others, it seems like there are some cops who believe that the speed limit is absolute, and there are some who feel that the flow of traffic is more important. So either way you're screwed, it just depends on which cop you get.
