Actually no, oil deposits are the remains of microscopic marine life. But it's a cool thought anyway.
*almost the most dangerous phrase 5 comments
supernovamike · 10 years ago
I have a hard time seeing that as the most dangerous. At worst, that phrase would ensure stagnation and a lack of progress, but there are other ideas out there that can actually push us backwards. Besides, it's grounded in reason -- tradition exists generally as a sum of all the wisdom that has gone before. Sometimes risks are too high and the "innovation" is too dangerous, and it's better to be safe than sorry. But I think what you want is to not only know that it's always been done this way, but to know why it's always been done that way. Then you can decide.

Don't worry guest, it's not. The fact that it's a post here on funsubstance means it's something unusual. If it was an everyday occurrence, people would have no reason to make funny posts about it online. It wouldn't be funny.

@doctorwhooligan there's no doubt that fear-mongeringand manipulation happens sometimes. People are just bound to do things like that once in a while, regardless of whether religion's even involved. God is full of love, which is why he would much rather we follow correct principles so that we can live with Him again. He doesn't damn anybody, we do that to ourselves. And our Father in Heaven cries for us when we do.
My comment on this post is that it's true, but that it's really really hard to genuinely understand something, especially if it's something you don't agree with. Naturally were inclined to distort and misrepresent anything we don't believe, even if we're not trying to. You see this literally everywhere people disagree -- both sides claim to know what the other is about, but neither side's accusations ate accurate.

Then as I said at the beginning, if we live in a culture where this kind of behavior is heroic, we're pretty much screwed.

Not a very good example. Stopping a robbery is for the good of society in general. You guys are trying to make excuses for this guy just because it's funny. Just read the words in the post: it is stated clearly that he did it out of spite only and just wanted to ruin the the family's day.
Obviously the kid's a brat, but so what? A hero doesn't act like a d***head just because he doesn't like someone. A selfish coward does.

It's not heroic to ruin someone's day just because you're in a bad mood. Heroes are people who make a positive contribution to their society -- not people who take every opportunity to make others miserable. This man exhibited no virtuous behavior whatsoever; just a selfish and sadistic sense of humor.

Why do we make someone a hero for being a total douche bag? Why does someone get respect for being belligerent and intentionally problematic, for no reason other than spite? Is this really what the world is coming to?

No way, you gotta see the fighting dinosaurs. It's a velociraptor and a protoceratops who died instantly while locked in an epic battle. They're near-perfect specimens, besides being totally B.A.

Regardless of the truth, my primary objection to this kid's statement is that he was bored. You should never be bored by things you disagree with. It shows you don't care.
