So, yeah, as to ship base, it's mostly Umbra's story to tell-- and, like I said, complicated.
I'll just say it involves terrifying monsters, lost sleep, a solemn promise, and unconditional loyalty.

Ah, yes, excellent insults, though I think "You yellow marker that was used to colour over something dark and now colours a really distressing muddy yellowish brown" might be a bit clumsy for regular use.
I am not often called upon to use insults, but when I am, I prefer such easily wielded phrases as "you absolute walnut," "you pathetic pie-eyed pricklebush," and "you
imbecilic boot-licking sot."
A bit of Shakespeare is also a nice addition, providing such eloquent epithets as "Thou cream faced loon," "I am sick when I do look on thee," "Your face is not worth sunburning," and, my personal favorite, "Thou clay-brained guts, thou knotty-pated fool, thou whoreson obscene greasy tallow-catch!"

I understand your motivation entirely. I hope it all turns out well for you. As for resources, there are many online communities that can help first time homeschoolers. Also, if you need any curriculum recommendations, I know quite a few good ones from the student's point of view.
