Most zombie apocalypse scenarios are caused by a pathogen infecting the living or recently dead, not the dead and buried. It'd be difficult for the pathogen to get through 6 feet of dirt and into the coffin. (not impossible, but unlikely) And even if it does infect a buried corpse, it's extremely difficult to get out of a coffin and to the surface.

While some of the cheaper brands are a burn hazard, the good quality ones are completely safe. No more dangerous than a heating pad or heated blanket.
