Humans were weird before the Internet, it's just better documented now.

They pronounced it "jif" so they could use the tag line "Choosy programmers choose GIF" which was a play on Jif peanut butters popular tag line at the time. So it has nothing to do with how the acronym _should_ be pronounced and all to do with marketing.

I was talking to a cab driver in SF one day and he told me one of the great joys in his life was taking drunk conventioneers who asked to be taken to the "red light" district while pulling off their wedding rings and dropping them off in the Castro (the LGBTQ district).

It's good practice for smiling at people you hate, which always un-nerves them.
