I just re-read the load of crap I typed and I think I'm just trying to sound smart.

As we all know, I like you and agree with you for the most part. And as usual, you're not entirely wrong. But the way people break when subjected to stress is vastly different across individuals and for some, it might be shutting down and for others it's suicide. So I think your problem isn't necessarily with suicide itself, it's the tendency to break towards suicide as opposed to another way.

Or in my case, I'm not used to the taste of failure so getting my first fail ever hit me like Sauron's mace.

I wonder if it also has to do with increased expectations of performing well.
