I used to do Shotokan karate and I thought it'd teach me how to fight but Shotokan is all about the katas and techniques that look really cool and like in a movie, but the sparring happens rarely, and when it does it's all very controlled and samey. Now I do MMA and man, the two just can't compare. Here you learn how to survive a fight. Now of course it's still controlled in a way, you can't have people choking each other till they pass out during the training (as kinky as some people may find it lol). And let me tell you, when a 100kg muscular dude pins you to the ground (I'm a 65kg woman myself) and just the weight of his body knocks your breath out, the adrenaline and fight or flight instincts do kick in.
