I read an article about this (can't find it now) where they would put the crystals in an oxygen tank roughly the size of a 21oz bottle. Then it would slowly dissipate the oxygen from the tank. The tank being a lot smaller and lighter and allow for longer periods of being underwater.

I pulled the picture up on my computer and then divided the height of the steel bar (which is allegedly 12 inches) by the height of the steel shot.

If that is indeed a 12inch thick steel block then that steel shot is approximately 1.9 inches in diameter by my calculations
