It's still a lovely pet, even as a giant rat.

What I pulled from this is that the boy originally thought the rat was a dog. Hence, him writing "perro" or, "dog" in spanish on his box/bed. They spent a lot of time together whilst the boy was trying to heal the animal, and the boy grew to love it. The last step was to shave it, and the boy found out it was a rat. But, the boy loved the animal for what it was, even though it wasn't what he originally thought. We shouldn't judge others for what they appear to be, but what they truly are on the inside. That's all.

That is a very, very beautiful interpretation and I love it. But you cannot deny that this is pretty much the weirdest metaphor ever.

Does your dog look all filthy and neglected like that? I doubt it does, because that would make you the rat :-)

I'm sorry but I can't sympathize, rodents are scary to me >_< but I love dogs and I've always wanted my own so I understand THAT :/...
