I get they can go through a lot of diapers but I noticed that because so many others get diapers, the mother-to-be doesn't get other things the baby might need. That's why my mom and I ususally give bath or feeding things like shampoo, lotion, baby powder, bibs, burp cloths, wash cloths, etc.
Those are great things to get too. (Maybe not the baby powder though; despite its name, it can be harmful if it gets in baby's eyes or lungs, even through regular use.) It helps if the mother makes a baby registry first.
The best gift I was ever given was a rolling storage shelf. I got many other expensive wonderful things. Like a baby swing, a stroller, a crib, a bassinet, a playpen, endless amount of blankets and cloths, but the storage shelf was the most helpful. It is silly I know but it is funny how the little things help the most.
