I have had to send my mom back to the store because she got the wrong kind. She tries to get cheaper ones but the cheaper ones are almost always the wrong brand or wrong size or without wings.

Why not just say GF instead of SO? Because it could also be your wife? SO should be used when it could apply to both men and women, I don't think the message would be lost on the marrieds if you said GF.
