What I got from shurikkaru's comment was that every religion used educated guesses to come up with the belief that there are gods.

Not so much as making educated guesses but more along the lines of seeing something they can't explain, and then making a bunch of general assumptions to explain it.

But assumptions that were totally valid within the experience of those individuals. People who believe in God today often do it the same way, and it's no less valid. Obviously this example is an exaggeration, but it is a process that we all do. Even hard scientists.
