Huh. This is really smart. I, ever since I was younger, used to save up my lunch money for I didn't really eat lunch at school anyway, and donated it where ever there was a worthy cause.

I mean, it was worth it. My family was just like these people, not even batting an eye towards the homeless. We would go on freeways and I would see so many homeless people, I knew I had to do something, even if it's a little something, I knew I could make a difference. It hurt me that my family did nothing, I knew I had to be different in order to make their life at least a bit more bearable.

I feel like your health should come first, before the health of others. You should have used your lunch money to buy yourself lunch, and volunteered instead. Seems pretty stupid to starve yourself; like self-flagellation due to middle class guilt.

I wasn't "starving" myself. Starvation is a whole other world, compared to what I was doing. Starvation to me, means not having anything to eat for days. I usually carry snacks, and I never really got hungry at school anyway, I just waited until I got home to eat, which isn't starvation. I eat my 3 daily meals. I usually used the lunch hour to study, or do homework.

The first guy wasn't asking anybody to give him something, but the second guy was. There is no guarantee that the money was going to a good place, but the first guy was just rude and it's didn't cost anything to tell him so.

If I understood the post correctly......it was the same guy. He did it to show that while a lot of people will talk about taking action and wanting others to do things, very few will actually take action themselves.

I think that one reason is because of how many scams there are about trying to "help people in need" but in reality it's just another way for people to get quick cash. This is just my opinion because I have gotten scammed before. And many people are cruel enough to trick others.

This is actually a really bad problem in my area, nearly everyday you see someone at an intersection holding a sign saying “Need money for funeral“. We don't know if they really need it or not so we don't even bother with them.

No, this is not how it works. You all claim we should feel bad about ourselves for not helping, but giving your money to a person who is obviously well fed and taken care of just because they have a sad sign isn't the way to go. 99% of them are scammers who are trying to earn quick and easy money on people's goodwill. Giving money to these scammers won't make you a good person, it will just make you feel better about yourself and that is in my opinion a very selfish thing to do. If you really want your money to have an effect on the world, give it directly to the people/foundations instead of some dude claiming to be the nicest person ever. You'll have to put both money and effort into it, but it's the real help. Unfortunately most people are lazy as hell and their goodwill doesn't go farther than around the corner.
