Somone said it!!!!!!! Tiptoeing around racism is not he way to get rid of it in scociety! Treating people special in cases like these because their ancestors were treated badly does not make us equal before the law and education system! It seems like lots of people think it does. In this case they are trying so hard not to be racist that it shows how obviously racist they are!
People who complain about minorities getting education grants reek of white privilege. The Native population in my state is (mostly) eligible for all sorts of college grants because, to put it bluntly, most can't afford to go to college. And education grants are conditional: a student has to reach certain benchmarks in order to receive and keep said grants. If you are a white, middle class student graduating from a decent high school, you already have a leg up in the college application process. And a minority student is not going to take the place of a white student, that is a total myth.
It amazes me when people say things like "most of Race A can't afford to go to college". All this manages to do is convey that you put too much stock in stereotypes.
In addition; if you are worried about people being unable to afford college than shouldn't the scholarship be based on income and/or savings and NOT race? As for student composition consider this. Colleges can only take a certain number of students. They are limited by the size of the campus and such. Now if the college must by law accept a certain number of black students, does this not reduce the inner of open seats for students of other ethnicities?
mgoveia: for my specific example, which is the Native population in my state, it is true. Many of them are too poor to attend a 4-year university without assistance. Felixo: Colleges don't fill, especially state colleges. A private university does not have to adhere to the same rules that a state run facility does. In fact, I've never heard one credible story about a college bumping a white student for a minority student. Also, to be blunt, race and poverty level are tied together, even though people might find that fact uncomfortable.
That's not an example. Give me facts, sources, etc. Just because you're repeating something you heard from God-knows-where doesn't mean it carries weight.
According the US Census Bureau, 27.4% of the Native population in my hometown, Albuquerque, is living in poverty. By the way, the poverty level is set at $23,050 for a family of four. There are four cities in New Mexico with a Native population who's poverty level is above 16.5% of their population. In Rapid City, South Dakota, the level is 50%.

I don't see what's the big deal about races. "Oh yes yes OUR school has a white MINORITY so special hmm hmm you should comeā¦such diversity so variation" People aren't doughnuts on display. Why yes we have a doughnut in every flavor.
It's a broader perspective. Diversity in college campuses in a good thing, overall. I do believe there are issues with how the whole thing is administrated, but it is better than nothing.
Omg, it's like pulling teeth around here. I can see I'm wasting my daily comments. Forget I even cared.
To the comment below, I expected you to actually know your shit. Oh well. Still not spending precious daily comments 'til you get your shit together.
This can be true sometimes, but many immigrants go to admirable efforts and lengths to make nice lives for themselves. They deal with many hardships that most Americans do not have to
And i believe they need help, but not because of their race, but because of what they went through. I am a white immigrant who lost EVERYTHING when I came to america, and I get no help, while a Native American friend I know who lives in a 5million dollar house goes to college free.
And the whole point of this post was the fact that race (or gender or anything else) shouldnt even be taken into consideration at ANY point if you don't want to be racist (or sexist, etc.) Saying its "for diversity" is just a bunch of BS to justify being racist.
You shouldn't have to hire or accept a Mexican guy, or a Black girl, or Chinese girl just because you already have a couple white guys. You should pick that Mexican guy, or Black girl, or Chinese girl because they are the most qualified for the position, OR if another white guy happens to be the most qualified, he should get it instead. Disqualifying that white guy because of his race (which is exactly what that would be, in the name of "diversity") is the exact definition of racism.
Most of America fought for the north in the civil war.
If we were held accountable for our ancestors actions, in America at least, African Americans would be thanking us.
Like for some really hard to get into schools, being asian lowers your chance to enter so much. Depending on the major, girls will also have a easier time... It varies for college what ethnicity helps and what doesn't
I also don't like how people in families other higher incomes do not have the same opportunities for scholarships and grants as those who are poorer when they perform equally the same on tests and GPA.
Like in where I'm at, I earn money for college each year based on my GPA in high school. Everyone in my school is on this program. Everyone can get extra money through this with a good ACT score. But only people from lower income households can get extra money if they take AP classes and pass the exam. My family is considered middle class and does not apply to this AP exception for college money even though I take an AP class and can perform just as well if not better. I understand helping out those who cannot afford college, but why should that exclude me too? Why can't I have that same opportunity if I can do just as well? My parents are counting on scholarships and grants for my college education, but I can't seem to get that just because we make a little more money than others.
This kind of thing really bothers me too. I've worked my ass off in high school (I'm in California) and I'm not "smart" enough to go to school in state because I don't have a 4.5. My friend is going to cal Berkeley for like half price because he's Native American. I love the kid but it's really unfair that I can't go to a good school like he can because I'm white
The lack of understanding for others on this site is so disgusting it's almost laughable. Anybody with any opinion that's different from the majority was down voted enough to be hidden from general view. translating that to real life, anyone that's different from the majority (AKA the minorities) aren't accepted and their opinions and good attributes aren't allowed to be shown because the majority blocks it out by force. Among other things, THATS why minorities need grants. You guys proved the point and the necessity for affirmative action whether you realized it or not, but you're so blinded by your "need to be seen as equal" that you didn't notice how unfair everything is. This comment section is truly white privilege at its finest. You all will NEVER understand the plight of minorities and the sad thing is you'll never even try. You're too busy talking about yourselves and how you didn't own slaves personally to even consider someone else's issues. You're all so sickening.
