This is true, when I worked retail the most common question I heard (almost hourly) 'do you have a bathroom?' Despite the three foot long bright yellow and blue bathroom sign suspended from the ceiling. So many times I wanted to crack people upside the head with that sign!
I work nights at a hotel and we lock the main door at night. It's a glass door that opens with a motion sensor. We have a sign taped on the door that looks you directly in the eye. It says the door is locked and to press the button for assistance. And it has a bright yellow finger pointing to the button. Even above the button is another sign that says "push button for assistance." You would be suprised at how many people try to go through the door and just look at me confused as to why it's not opening and getting mad. People also knock on it.. When I let them in I tell them there's a sign on the door to make them feel stupid. I think it works.
