To be fair Australia has freaking demon spawns crawling everywhere, Canada has random maple syrup attacks, and us Americans are just scared of everything.
Are you kidding? I've been in Texas, and I'm pretty much sure I awoke everyone in a 5 mile radius when I screamed bloody murder at 2AM after I saw one of the biggest roaches and some other bugs I had ever seen coming from seemingly nowhere. Did I mention I am completely terrified of cockroaches? I had to get my 12 year old cousin to kill them. 12!
And there are wasps. And Mosquitos. And bees. Did I mention wasps? There is some that are HUGE. And spiders, yellow jackets, etc. I'm sorry but down in the south your legs will be covered in bug bites if you do not use bug repellant.
I'm saying that there is a lot of insects making them a nuisance. That having screens is useful in a way of luxury not pretection from the treacherous elements of the outside world. They make life easier so I don't have to clean up leaves/bugs that fly in.
I live in Germany and we don't have these screens and we leave everything open when it's really hot and I wake up in the middle of the night with mosquitos and moths and spiders and I hate that because they always come near me and fly in my face (well not the spiders) and I'm to afraid to scream so I have this reaaally big glass in my room to catch them and wait till my father kills them in the morning
Note: I am from the Seattle area.
Okay, so what I found was that there are lower numbers of mosquitos in Western Washington despite the amount of lakes and water around here in the nice summers. Low humidity and cool weather during the year apparently makes a poor breeding ground for mosquitos. There are other reasons as well, but I intend to keep this short. In Europe, you'll also find less mosquitos than most parts of America and Australia. There is a strong correlation between window screens and number of mosquitos.
Conclusion: The more mosquitos found in an area, the more frequent window screens are.
