The SS was part of the Nazi Secret police. That is different from the regular German army. You had to be a true believer in fascism to be in the SS.
On a side note, have fun at family gatherings, now that you know Gramps was totally okay with gassing Jews.
The SS Grupen were also responsible for going around to other cities in Poland and other countries in Greayer Germany, and rounding up the Jews and leading them to the woods were they would assassinate them
I know I'm late to the discussion here, but just because he was a member of the SS doesn't mean he was "totally okay with gassing Jews", even many members of the SS had lost some amount of faith in their Führer but had sworn allegiance to him, even the (correct me if I'm wrong here because I might be) head of a particular area of the german military (don't remember which part) was against many of Hitlers acts but conformed to them as not to break his life oath
That's nonsense. There were only two directions when you joined the SS; into the upper echelons or into the ground. There were NOT any pro-Jewish folk amongst them; by definition, you had to be giddy at the idea of Jewish extermination. Christ, they were pretty much the only ones who actually knew what the Final Solution was.
I'm not saying they would have had to of been 'pro-Jewish' but they didn't all necessarily all %100 agree with the actions of their leader, or any other high ranking officials (Himmler etc). He may very well have been heavily anti-Jew and absolutely in favour of the "thousand year reich", but he may not have been, look at Albert Speer, known as "the good Nazi" or "the Nazi that apologised", he was fairly high ranking (being the head architect of the Third Reich) but he was not a radical "must exterminate all minorities" kind of guy (as far as we know)
I'm not saying I'm a Nazi apologist, I'm just looking at the situation realistically, there's no use demonising those who have done wrong. As after all, not everyone under the rule of a "bad guy" is going to be a "bad guy", because I can assure you not every last soldier of Stalin would've been a horrible, mass-murdering lunatic
And he also wanted Unicorns to be the primary mode of transportation for the German people.
See how easy it is to make up shit when they are not allowed to tell their side of the story?
They don't get to tell their side of the story. It's the difference between fighting a war and working overtime to exterminate an entire race. You take your lumps and ask for more, if necessary.
Not the German people, just those who pretend it didn't happen.
