I doubt this is real. Google translate can't be that natural-sounding!!

I think the suggestion is that the student wrote the text on the right, then translated it into the Chinese on the left.

I think it's a school assignment, like the student was supposed to write a diary entry as a Chinese person during the gold rush, and they used google translate to write it.
