I was there for holidays in a hotel on there! It really is cool. Did you know they're planning a worldmap-island-thing? They started to put sand in the ocean to make islands in the shape of a worldmap, with hotels, etc. ...
Construction on that one halted back in 2008 and has yet to resume. Just over half of the islands have been sold off to developers and there has been no development on them.
.
I expect that to change soon, as their economy has really started to finally rebound as of late.
WTF guys.
I used to Live in Dubai, and a big majority of the people in my school lived in the palm or near it!
It does sound all WOW but ask anyone who lives in Dubai and find out living there is common as shit.
I am sorry, but don't get me wrong, the palm is still awesome, but for some people, it's just home.
And about the world islands, you can take a boat to a little place with a restaurant on one of the island, but the rest are empty and for sale, except for the kings private island.
Just no one can afford one..
It's not about wealth, it's about investment in the future. The Prince of Dubai knows that the oil will not flow forever. He conceived a plan to transform from a mere oil exporter to an international business, media, commerce and cultural center to reduce and eliminate their dependency on oil exports for their livelihood.
.
Excessive opulance? Maybe, but in order to make a mark in as short a time span as possible, you have to "go big." The projects undertaken thus verge into the extreme, even the absurd to some.
.
Palm Jumeirah and the associated Palm islands for example will add 520 kilometers of coastline to the city. Property that is highly sought after.
