Harley was broken and battered much like how Joker was. She was always alone until she met someone equally alone. They could be themselves with eachother. Crazy as fuck but love is love.

I think there was a comic where Harley said that she was abused by the Joker. So really, it was a sad case of Stockholm syndrome.

Multiple comics and tv versions have come around but that was the gist of most of them. My favorite was the Batman animated serious during the Batman Animated series (1993-1995) when Batman rather than being the depressed fuck he was in the Dark Knight movies he cared for those who needed help. He took Harley out of the crime world and put her up in a rehabilitation clinic to help her start a new life. Batman was significantly different back then...
