My best friend is depressed,so I agree with this 100 %. Why would he have CHOSEN to be depressed? You think he wanted to be so upset that he nearly killed himself?!
Wow, that's scary. :( I struggled with a little bit of depression recently for about 2 weeks. The BEST thing that helped me was to get out of the house and go somewhere with a friend and talk about what was bothering me. Helped tremendously.
Tell someone in a wheelchair to stand up and walk. Tell someone who lost their arms that they can still do work. Tell someone with heart problems not to have a heart attack. Tell them.
Goddamnit, I can't find it on Google.
There was a quote from Tumblr that I found on FS that went something like...

Telling someone they don't have any right to be depressed because there's so much good in the world is like telling an asthmatic they're not allowed to have asthma because there's so much oxygen in the air.
I got told by my doctor!!! What have you got to be depressed about? You have your own home, car, money in the bank. A loving family who support you.. I reported him and strangely he was taking early retirement in next months Practice Newsletter (I wonder if I wasn't the only patient who had reported him for his arrogant attitude)??!!
I hate when people say their depressed when their just sad. Like no, your not depressed your not constantly in a state of hate and sorrow and you don't always feel like you want to end it all. No your not depressed your just temporarily sad.
YThere is a switch to turn it off. Just jam a fork into a socket and flip that switch. By the way, what I'm saying is that the only way to truly get rid of depression is to kill yourself. People who are truly depressed will likely have episodes or constant depression for their whole lives; there is no cure, just treatment of the symptoms and even then the best treatments only work in 30-60% of severely depressed patients. That's pretty horrific and frankly disgusting. The amount of money spent on cures for physical illnesses such as cancer and AIDS is disproportionately higher than treatments for illnesses which fundamentally destroy who a person truly is (mental illnesses). Modern antidepressants are no more effective than the original treatment options dating back to the 1950s, and we still don't even know how these drugs help lift depression; that is truly disgraceful in my opinion. furthermore, antidepressants are only more effective than placebo if the results are altered.

Just a question. Have people always been depressed or has it been more of a recent thing that it happens so much?

My depression stems from being diagnosed with crohns as a child, constant battling with the symptoms for 4 1/2 years with little or no change despite the cocktail of steroids I was taking daily only to then be told that I was having planned surgery on the 11th of May 2001 to remove my entire large colon and have a permanent Ileostomy bag which also just so happened to be my 16th birthday. I have since had 5 more surgeries since that date and my tummy looks like a car crash scar wise. That in turn has knocked my confidence, the way I dress & what I can and can't eat. My sleep pattern has also been majorly disrupted over the last 13yrs due to the bags habits during the night. So all in all that is the reason why my mental health has been severely affected due to the life altering surgical intervention I've had and continued to have since 2001. (Thanks for listening guys & gals) :)
The first dozen of these were touching and instructive. The next 30 were a little annoying. By now these "depression is an illness so don't say to just get over it" posts are just self referential. In addition, they seem to be from 15 year olds who just discovered this idea and need to share it with everyone else, plus they have a friend who has an acquaintance who suffered from depression.
