In the UK the age of consent is 16, not 18 as it is in much of the US, so there would actually be 19 sexually active years, which decreases the average to... 2.9 men per day.

People (including whomever wrote the headline) seem to have trouble with "up to" and "short lives" . Also if this hypothetical gay person is a prostitute from his early teens (not uncommon) then this number is not at all unbelievable.
