Railguns are really efficient but they suck up insane amounts of energy, produce lots of heat, and quite possibly more recoil than a 'normal' cannon (not really 'efficient' huh). I think I read somewhere that if we had a battleship with all railguns it wouldn't be able to fire a full broadside because the increased recoil'll tip the whole thing over.
