Isn't it hilarious how so many are concerned about fat people being unhealthy, yet no one talks about the effects of marijuana on heart disease, or what alcohol does to the liver, and what diseases unprotected sex can cause.
^Exactly! Practically everyone knows about STD's and alcohol, but it seems lately people would rather justify being fat and lazy (if that is the case, I'm not saying everyone who's obese is a lazy slob) rather than trying to do something about it.
Actually I've never seen anyone talk about weed and heart disease, people just talk about how great weed is and complain about its illegal status. And seriously? There really isn't widespread denial about obesity. It's practically everyone's pet issue, they go everywhere posting stuff like this. Especially on this site. And most people who are overweight (and don't have a medical reason for it) know damn well what issues it can cause and how calories work. People who honestly claim that 400 pounds isn't an issue can't be helped by internet pictures anyway. I have also read multiple (scholarly) articles about how fat shaming is counterproductive and I would post them here if my university did not explicitly forbid it. Bottom line is it isn't your place to tell people how to live, you sure wouldn't like it if they did that to you. And if you're delusional and self righteous enough to think it is, just know that you're probably doing more harm than good.
So, there's NOT widespread denial about obesity, yet whenever the subject comes up, there's plenty of people with their heels dug in talking about genes and hormones and bullshit as if that's what is causing an entire EPIDEMIC.

Yes deadpool they do exist. But since my university pays a lot of money for access to academic journals the students are not allowed to share them online. They aren't confidential anyone can access them if they are willing to pay upwards of 50 bucks for them. As it is with a lot scholarly articles.
mgoveia you can't be serious. Every time I see this type of thing come up its one or two people truly in denial and then just a barrage of people going on about dieting and risks of obesity and then several others who just go one about how gross fat people are. Even the first lady has made obesity her issue do you really think the majority of people DON'T KNOW that it's a problem?
Of course you can KNOW something is a problem, but still be in denial about it. In fact, you kinda HAVE to know something is a problem in order to deny it.
Yeah, deadpool, ignore the science and share your opinion who cares if it hurts other people. Who care if it is counterproductive to what you supposedly are trying to accomplish?
What science? The alleged science and internet articles that you keep throwing at everyone who dares to be of the opinion that being fat is unhealthy? I never said anything with the intent of being hurtful, I mean, that's like saying its wrong of me to tell a person with the flu that consuming something cold is bad for their health and will worsen their condition. And in terms of counter-productive, my methods seem to work pretty well at our community centre, hell kids and adults have thanked me, not complained about their self esteem. It seems that you keep fighting these things more to convince yourself than anyone else.
I have NEVER said that fat was healthy. My whole thing has been about people being decent towards one another. Those internet articles are ones my university provides that I had to get from google scholar rather than directly posting them. I don't care what you THINK about fat people the only thing I ever argue for is to get people to stop blurting hurtful crap at eachother. Pestering people about their weight is a hell of a lot different then giving advice about the flu. And if you'd do 30 minutes of reading on google scholar you'd know that people who are regularly "reminded" tend to weigh more and make poorer choices. And I don't need to convince myself of anything. I don't weigh 400 lbs, I don't have any weight caused/exacerbated issues, and I go to the gym 3-4 days a week. My favorite pastimes are all outdoor ACTIVE things and yet people just assume I don't have my shit together and feel the need to tell me how to live my life like it is any of their God damn business!
THAT shit is what I have a problem with. If you don't know that person you have no clue why they are the way they are and regardless of what it is it doesn't give you license to butt in to other people's lives.
