Not the published work, but Tolkien had much more story in his original manuscript which wasn't used in the book. The whole thing about the necromancer in the south was merely mentioned in the book, whereas you get a lot more detail in the film. This is the one case I can think of in which the movies actually have more story than the book.

I feel bad that he didn't get to play Gandalf, but it's great that he enjoyed filming all this stuff, and now I'm crying because he's a little old man.

He is a serious badass though. He used to hunt nazis and he taught Peter Jackson what the sound of stabbing someone sounds like.

Lee is the most amazing man ever. He's filmed movies in Russian, English, German, and Italian. He released a metal album when he was in his 80's. He hunted Nazis during World War 2.
