And then makes fun of skinny girls throughout the whole song and sings about how she feels validated because mummy told her that being big turns men on.
EXACTLY!! people say that this song is about body positivity but it's skinny shaming the thin girls! Validating one group while shaming another doesn't make sense
And not all skinny girls WANT to be skinny. They could have something that makes them not be able to gain weight. My mom is 5'10 and she weighs 100lbs because she has Chrons disease.
I'm not super skinny, but i'm still pretty thin and it's because i have an abnoxiously fast metabolism. i've tried gaining weight, but it just didn't work because the more i eat, it seems my metabolism gets faster. i've just learned to accept it and be happy with what i have, but i hate when people say that kind of stuff in songs and on social media because not all skinny girls want to be skinny and being told that curves make you more attractive is just like getting salt poured into a wound
hah thanks. i eat more than all of my friends combined and they hate it because i won't gain any weight from eating an XL pizza and a tub of ice cream, but they gain weight even if they have a salad for a whole week. it's nice and i having a fast metabolism has it's perks, but i really hate when a lot of songs and stuff these days is basically 'real women have curves' and 'all skinny girls have eating disorders' and stuff like that
ALTHOUGH she has been proven a hypocrite, we should look at this as an example where pointing out other's flaws doesn't help anyone (you can call her a hypocrite, but by pointing out her actual flaws and flailing them around, you, in turn, are the hypocrite)(there are so many commas in that last sentence)(I have no idea which are necessary).
Wow. I get the point but I don't get the dimension of the dismay many people feel.
In so many music videos that contain sexy stuff the women are skinny "bitches" and "hoes", seductively dancing and twerking around the men who have laid them all, licking ice cream like a dick while wearing prostitute outfits.
And just because there are no explicit insults to fat women it's at least not as bad as that song. But have you ever considered that it's already a clear sign, a silent but obvious message that chubby women just get excluded from the "sexy zone" so often? You don't always have to vocalize something, an attitude can be seen in the behaviour.
Beyond that it's actually funny that make-up & bodyshaper are criticized but no one complains about seeing no armpit hair or stretch marks. I guess that would be *too* natural. And I can easily imagine how many mean posts would be created if she would have really shown herself completely natural.

Thank you very much! I often fear that people just think "What is that person trying to tell me?" because I have to look up several words and the comma placement & tenses sometimes unsettle me. I think this is the first feedback I got about my English since I left school (almost four years ago), so again, really: Thank you.
It's more about the fact that this song has been glorified as a body positive song, but it's actually quite the opposite. Be as natural or unnatural you want, say bitch or hoe, but do not market your song as "body positive" when you're putting down others and telling girls you're only beautiful if a guy wants you.
Like I said, I get the point. But I don't understand how there can be so much "joy" over having a singer "unmasked", as if she was the hypocrite of the year. In so many comments there's this subtle taste of moral supremacy which is just wrong and not less fake. "It's funny because he's fat", oh that's cool, calling a fat woman a "walrus", that's harmless, but one "photoshopped skinny bitch" - how dare you. Even if - that's what I think - the singer doesn't refer to all the nice thin girls but rather just alludes to the minimumbodyweight-thighgap-hunger-trend. That's not hard to notice in this context, well, unless you just like to bristle at anything.
And please remember: It's a song, not a manifest.

I hate how people say that this song is empowering...legit shit, her only way of feeling better was that her mom said guys like girls with big butts...really?! Also, let's say Taylor Swift made some song saying how she loves being skinny or something...how would it feel? I understand that music has gotten to be just disrespectful, but this is just plain stupid that she goes on and writes about how guys like bigger girls better. It's so stupid how now people are thinking that a way to make people feel better about themselves is to slam someone who isn't like them. How about we all stfu about negative things and positively say thongs about people? (sorry, I hate this song and I can't stand when people say that this and andaconda are "empowering" to women)
why are people not shaming taylor swifts songs? why are people treating her like a queen? That shake it off song sounds like something off of kids bop. Terrible lyrics, come on she can do way better.
Because she hasn't sung about anything controversial or shamed anyone.
I actually hated taylor swift for the longest time, but when i saw her being goofy in that music video and hearing her basically saying "i dont care what people assume about me." i started to respect her.
No, I'm just playing I know you think you're fat"
