What does bra mean then? I know what a bra is but seems to me should be abbreviation of a word that makes mose sense. Because german nane makes sennse. In Spanish I say sosten which can be translated to something like support
Bra is an abbreviation of brassiere which came about in the early twentieth century from the French word brassière.
.
Brassière doesn't actually have anything to do with breasts. It means "upper arm". In 1904, the DeBevoise Company decided to use French to advertise their bust supporter (because French sounded "fashionable") so they called it a brassière. The term "bra" was first used in the 1930s as an abbreviation.

Actually "Büste" does not translate "boobs", those would be "Brüste" rather - note the relation to "breast" - whereas "Busen" is the gap in between the breasts. Many call the breasts "busen" though, which is technically wrong. No german would call female breast "büste" that is a 19th century term for the upper lady parts covered pretty much exactly by - tadah - a brassiere.
Same thing in polish - "Biustonosz"
Biust = boobs,
nosz, from verb nosić = to carry
So umm, yup boobs are being carried, not held in Poland. We take pride in this activity ;_;
We usually just use the abbreviation.
