The smoke is actually vaporized wax. In this gif they used a lighter to relight the vapor trail, causing the candle to light again. (Does that make any sense?) You can see the flame traveling down the vapor trail back to the wick.

Saw this on a show called Outrageous Acts of Science! My aunt, brothers, and I tried it together and it works!
