I have watched most of these and havent cried once.
Grave of the fireflies was quite sad but the others were just ok, watership down was very pretty and plauge dogs was much more grim then sad.
I still need to watch barefoot gen and when the wind blows... Anybody have something sadder?
I've seen plague dogs. I still can't believe it's only a PG

I feel like Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot gen can be slightly misleading in a way. Of course, nothing is wrong with depicting the sufferings of their people because of the war, but many people watching the movie would get a sense that Japan was only the victim in the war. In reality they caused massive havoc on other countries and sometimes the things they did were worse than the Nazis. But they depict none of that in any movies they create, they only portray themselves as total victims of the war and put that out for the public.
this is true, dont even get started at what they do at china. my teacher (who is chinese) told me that when japan invaded china the soldiers bursted open pregnant woman stomach while the woman still conscious and, stab the fetus with the pointy things ( they have gun glommed with something pointy like the tip of spear ) and threw it to another japanese soldier that will catch it with another spear while the mother was watching. they even rape other countries. they really are so cruel and inhuman. my teacher refer it as black history. and until today most chinese still hold grudges towards china
When Japan invaded Nanjing, they held beheading competitions, made fathers rape their own daughters, sliced breasts off women, and collected womens pubes to use them for good-luck spells. (No I'm not kidding) But some Japanese people are claiming that the Nanjing massacre never happened despite all the evidence. Same with other things they did to other countries. If Japan at least acknowledged their dark side of history, I'd be fine with them completely, but they fail to do so

I agree with all of the points made here, and there is no forgiveness for acts of evil. But in the sense of what these animations are trying to represent, it is the life of the innocent bystanders of every nation caught in wars destructive wake that the directors and animators are trying to portray. To help show a perspective that is constantly overlooked with the idea that most media shows the struggles of the many and the important, instead of the few and the "unimportant". We may not sign up for war, yet we still die in it. It all makes me sad.
What I got out out of those two movies, personally, is the effects of war on the people NOT fighting it, like youngintrovert said.
e.g; Barefoot Gen starts with the father admitting he doesn't support the war. Their family doesn't have enough food because of it. And then, because of the government not surrendering, Hiroshima gets nuked and the majority of his family dies.
In Grave of the Fireflies, the opening scene itself depicts a bunch of dying, malnourished kids, probably orphaned by the war like Seita and his sister.
.
Basically, I don't think either of those movies are excusing what the Japanese did, I believe they're actually illustrating just how BAD the war (that they essentially caused) was, especially for their own people - which, in my opinion, makes them look even worse.
