That's because the colonization of Mars is just a bunch of BS that NASA and other scientists use to try and get funding. Trust me, if there was money to be had by giving Africa water, it would have been done by now. That is how science 'works'.
It is actually easier to send all that stuff to mars than provide clean drinking water in many unfortunate countries. The sad part is that in quite a few of the countries that could really benefit from receiving aid to get that clean water won't let people do it. In a perfect world it would take way less money to provide the entire world potable water than it would to send people to mars. However, this is not a perfect world and while some people are willing to help and do what they can many don't care about anyone else but themselves and what they can get out of it.
1. NASA actually has funding in the millions, not billions like most other American groups. They don't get as much.
2. It would be a lot better to colonize other planets so that when the population goes over capacity we don't rum out of room and resources ( because hopefully there will be areas on the colonies where you can grow food and maybe find another source of water somewhere ? )
It's not that it's too complicated, it's that "it's too expensive" yet sending the same resources to an entirely different planet is apparently acceptable. So shameful.
But I completely agree with your point
