Soccer is just slang for "Associative Football". Everyone but the USA kept the word "Football", while America just took the SOC in "asSOCiative football" and called it SOCcer.
Umm, that's close but not quite right. The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word "association". America and Canada just kept calling it that after it was already coined and widely spread. Probably to differentiate between Associative Football and American Football a derivative of rugby that was also called Football as of 1876. Before that there was no standard name and any sport that you played with a ball and your feet could be and often was called football.

Australia has AFL, Aussie Rules Football, or footy as we like to call it. We also have soccer which is what a large portion of the world calls the sport.
Its called soccer because they have football and obviously couldnt call them both football same as here in ireland we call it soccer because there is also football......gaelic football :l
