Back before ballpoint pens were invented? And pencils were shit? Yes. I mean, what would you have them write with? Sticks ? Quils? The only decent writing instrument was a fountain pen!

Fountain pens were far too expensive to ever let a kid use, it would have been a dip pen or crowquill.

Which would also allow calligraphy to be written. No pen needed.

They need to continue to sell dip pens and/or crow quills then
