That's because, in the US, education is a business, and a big one at that. There is no "learning for learning sake" anymore, it's all about job training, and the words on the piece of paper you get at the end.

It also got much more expensive once the government started backing the student loans. Before that happened it was more manageable.
Actually, it's not really until college that you get to choose your own classes related to the career you want in life. It is true in elementary to high schools that they don't teach you many life skills, like home ec or balancing a checkbook, which actually used to be a part of education.
Guest #2, exactly. You don't get to learn anything applicable to your career or real life stuff. And yes I was unclear but I was talking about elem to high school in my comment.

That should be our new motto, instead of "In God We Trust" it should just say "Because fuck you, that's why"

Actually, in Scotland education is free and you also get paid to go into higher education from the ages of 16, on top of that, you can get a student loan, which you don't have to pay if you get into a job earning you less than £17,000 annually, and any amount still payable after 35 years will be cancelled. So it's not that bad
You guys get *paid* to continue high school and/or go to college after 16?? And you get breaks on loans??

Free college, but you have to pass a MUCH higher hurdle to be admitted. Then, can't major in Gender Equity Studies or African-American history or Community Activism.
