This is another one of those things that pisses me off so much about the movies. I don't know why they didn't just follow the book!

Except for the part where he only won the final fight because he was fighting his own wand because Tom misinterpreted a legend.

But it wasn't an accident. Harry had the opportunity to get the elder wand before Tom.

But he didn't know that it was his until it already was. He just happened to do the right things to gain ownership of the wand, with out that ever being his goal. It was a coincidence that led to his victory.
