My grandpa's oldest brother died in Auschwitz, a while before it ended. He was a Nazi, but I still looked up to him. He was my childhood hero...
My grandfather also died in Auschwitz. He got drunk one night and fell out of the guard tower.

Are you serious? Mine died that way too, only he was pushed and wasn't drunk. He made a bet about something with someone and refused to repay it afterwards, so yeah. It would have officially been an accident if my other grandpa hadn't seen it all happen.
That was because the military's supply were stretched and people needed to pitch in to keep them supplied. At present such sacrifices aren't needed. It's just not that dire of a situation, which is a good thing. If you really want to sacrifice for them you could enlist.
