My boyfriend decided to try something out since his name on there is gender-neutral so he just put "girl" as the tag or something and then BAM 50 messages asking how old, what you're wearing, and blah blah blah. Too many desperate guys on there.
That could be the key. Troll the hounds to the brink of uncertainty.
On certain games, when you setup your avatar there is a choice of gender.
The female incarnation can be a good bit smaller. Wether that will register fewer hits is something the programmers decide, but its certainly a smaller target. I saw many male gamers choose the female for asthetic as well as pragmatic reasons.
That is an avenue for designers and players to combat this injustice.
In the gaming community I'm in we have multiple female gamers and have for many years and this is the first time I've ever had any issue brought up to me regarding harassment but this was someone who harassed a majority of the people in my squad. We had him removed immediately.

It's from my knowledge that the majority of online multiplayer games have a mute feature and/or a block feature and the best way to deal with people like that is to mute them and move on.
This is powerful. Next time, I'm going on as TheChick or something like that and when the lil' doggies start messaging, the fun begins.
When a teammate hits me up, I'll say "oh, maybe later" then when an enemy tries to strike up a convo, I'll say "Yeah! Meet me in sector B-2". Five minutes later: "Where are you?" me: "On my way!"
Next enemy: "Meet me in H-7"
etc.
Then in teamspeak just give 'em the Barry White. "What's up, buttercup?"
If I go onto a game im there for the game. I dont want to have to focus on flirting and trying to backstab that medic or kill that cloaker at the same time. If I happen to talk over voice chat to someone fun, so be it, but that isnt why Im playing the game. If I wanted to try and get a girl the last place I would do it would be in a firefight.
So they have right to perv on her just because she wants to enjoy a game? If they were well-behaved, they would let girls enjoy the game without perving.
Yeah, I can see that being annoying. But as someone who is looking for a real relationship... nothing is a bigger plus than a girl who is even casually into gaming.
Well, relationships can bloom through gaming but doesn't mean you have to hound after every girl you see that's playing a game. ... just let it happen, don't try and force yourself
also please don't think all male gamers are like this, i mean I'd love to have a girlfriend that's as big a geek as i am but oddly enough I'm constantly cautious of someone being a "gamer gurl" (aka a female who spends more time taking pictures with a system, or only plays games to try and tease males)
The core gamer doesn't give a shit about gender, they just want to play the game. It's those who like to ruin the fun for everyone else that often times speak the loudest.
