Somebody please help us understand the point that lady is trying to make.

I THINK the lady is saying the post is wrong because working people do not have to take a drug test to buy groceries, so people on welfare should not have to either....but her comment seems illogical to me.

But in most cases they have to take one to be hired for a job and in some cases randomly or yearly after that.

Like I said, her logic is flawed. She is saying that no one has to take a drug test to get groceries, but she is completely overlooking how people got the money for the groceries in the first place.

Every job I've gotten (save for my current one since, well I'm the boss and only employee) I've had to take at least one pre-hire drug test (two in one case since the results were screwed by a medicine I was on at the time but my doctor cleared that up) and one job was a yearly and randomly type setup since I was operating construction equipment.

I have to agree with the drug test. 1 every month or 2

Hell twice a week. Cocaine leaves the system after 3 days

Why are we not funding this?

It costs money to test pee. It was tried a few times and it cost more to do the tests then it saved.

They should take it out of their welfare check. At least a part of that money will be put to good use.

So you'd rather save some money and let some person (and possibly their family) starve because they have a habit that is extremely hard to kick (and that person might be trying their hardest to stop or they slipped up for the first time in months). Nice.

If they can't stay off drugs it's their own fault, noone else's. Better give that money to a family that doesn't spend it on drugs.

While they are at it, they shouldn't be allowed to buy cigarettes or alcoholic beverages with the money they get, if they want those luxuries they can work for them like everybody else.

Maybe they are trying to earn those luxuries? Maybe they are trying to get back on their feet and are a recovering addict? Having welfare can give them a foundation to stand on.

Then when they're able to earn those luxuries, let them buy. Not while on welfare.

I imagine this would cut down on eligibility.

Which would be good. You have a choice to make. Use your money on good things like food, or use it on drugs.

Then you would have a bunch of people in poverty having more reasons to cause crimes(I would also like a drug test requirement but it's probably going to do more harm)

It would cost more to drug test everyone on welfare than it would save in lost benefits to drug users.

Stats? And how many people do you think would actually go to get tested, knowing they wouldn't pass?
4
whospikedthepunch

Most wouldn't bother, that's why they refuse to get jobs because 99% of places require drug tests as part of the pre-hire process and they don't want to give up the drugs.

Allot of people on welfare and assistant programs are not on it long term. There are time limits on them. Rules. And its not like you're rolling in dough. It is still hard to pay for basics and sometimes you have to borrow to make up the difference. I've literately had to make a choice between having some food or new tooth brushes, soap, & razors after I was down sized. I was working a job under the table and hurt my back really bad and was unable to work for half a year. It is never a simple matter.

Guest - not everyone on welfare is abusing it, and you seem to have a personal experience to support this. However, as a social worker, I have experienced vastly more people who take advantage of the system then people who use it correctly.

I'm for welfare but this is a really good point

Well I've seen this many times but no-one who knows anything about welfare would agree. BECAUSE a lot of people on welfare are recovering from drug addiction if they are what do we do leave them alone

Why? If you read the studies on testing welfare recipients it is a huge waste of money and they don't find many users.

Had to come to the bottom to find this comment, but glad I did. Thank you for pointing this out.

The rest of the states should do what Maine is doing. In order to get a welfare check you must do something for the government. Basically making them work for welfare. This eliminates the many people taking advantage of the system. The other day a guy in walmart told me he was willing sell me 100 dollars worth of welfare money for 50 dollars. I've never been more disgusted at a piece of shit person.

In college I lived with an idiot the same age as me. He wasn't going to college nor working. His dad sustained him. Since his dad earned enough money to maintain him he didnt have to work. Therefore he was eligible for welfare. The asshole ate like a king while I ate ramen on the reg. There's something definitely wrong with the system.

I get that working for money is good and that giving money to people who airnt working seems stupid but once you actually think about the amount of good decent people who want jobs but simply can't get them or a family where someone's been down sized or just anyone who's fallen on harsh times it seems unfair to but them through this as your placing this whole new stigma of "hey your on benefits you must be a scumbag " on them. Furthermore many recreational drug users are just normal people and to say that they shouldn't be able to blow off some steam be it from a few drinks with friends or smoking a joint at home is just stupid because without some outlets it's so easy to get depressed or stuck when your living hand to mouth. (I don't take drugs but I know people that do . (jobs, family, finances intact) I don't think taking drugs all the time is ok. I don't think we should keep assuming the worst of people and should offer other ways for them to example their best)

There are other ways to blow off steam besides drugs and alcohol, I don't use either (don't even use any tobacco) and work 365 days a year and I manage to keep my stress and depression in check mainly by either atv riding or building things.

Forget about drug testing welfare recipients. I'd like to see government officials drug tested instead.
